  1. In a bowl toss together the cucumbers, onion, if using, and dill.
  2. Combine sugar, vinegar, water and salt and bring to a boil.
  3. Pour over cucumbers.
  4. Stir to coat.
  5. Cover and refrigerate 3 hours or overnight.
