Ingredients:

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 (1/4 oz) package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup water (warm )

Directions:

  1. Dissolve yeast into 1/2 warm water, set aside.
  2. Sift together first five ingredients.
  3. Using 2 knives cut in 1/2 cup shortening into mix till mixture in pea like in size; add dissolved yeast.
  4. Add buttermilk and mix well.
  5. Roll out on floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Use a round cookie cutter or just cut into squares.
  7. Bake at 400°F 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Brush tops with melted butter.
