Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf crusty bread
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 stick cold butter , cut into pieces

Directions:

  1. Grease 9x13 pan - tear bread into chunks and evenly distribute in the pan
  2. Mix together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla - pour evenly over bread - cover and store in fridge several hours or overnight
  3. In separate bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt - add nutmeg if desired - add butter pieces and cut into the dry mixture until mixture resembles fine pebbles - store in fridge
  4. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350
  5. Remove casserole from fridge, sprinkle crumb mixture over the top - bake for 45 minutes for a softer texture - bake for 1 hour or more for a firmer, less liquid texture
  6. Top each serving with butter and syrup
