Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 cups of half and half
  • 1/2 cup of apple butter ; can sub fig jam or orange marmalade
  • even cream cheese
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 4 tbsp of butter
  • 1/4 cup of sweet sherry

Directions:

  1. Spread five slices of bread with a thin layer of apple butter (use cooking license here, feel free to sub with fig jam, or bitter orange marmalade....I'd even try a bit of softened cream cheese to be truly decadent.)
  2. Top with other five slices of bread.
  3. Cut little sandwiches out of stacked bread...try for nine each.
  4. Butter a 1 1/2 quart baking dish.
  5. Cream eggs and sugar well.
  6. Add vanilla to half and half.
  7. Add to creamed sugar mix and blend well.
  8. Put the little sandwich cubes in the prepped baking dish.
  9. Pour milk mixture over and allow to soak.
  10. Preheat oven to 350.
  11. Place baking dish in a pan of water halfway up the dish.
  12. Bake 45-50 minutes until set.
  13. Serve warm, topped with hard sauce.
  14. Make hard sauce by creaming the butter and sugar, add Sherry and cook over low heat until sugar melts.
