Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 sups sifted flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 teasp. baking soda
  • 3/4 teasp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup water

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350' F.
  2. Grease bottom of an 8-inch square pan.
  3. Sift flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and the salt into a 3-quart bowl
  4. Add shortening, egg, and the evaportated milk to dry mixture
  5. Beat 3 minutes with electric beater at medium speed
  6. Scraping the sides of bowl often
  7. Add water and cherry syrup and beat hard for 1 minute.
  8. Stir in cut-up cherries
  9. Pour into prepared pan
  10. Bake at 350' on the center rack for 50 - 55 minutes or until cake pulls from sides of the pan
  11. Remove from oven. let stand 10 minutes before turning out to cool
  12. Frost with your choice of frosting.
