1. Using a large bowl, soak the beans in water, cover with dish towel. Let soak at least eight hours.
2. Drain the beans. Add beans to pot of water over medium heat.
3. Add the carrots, the onion, and the ham.
4. If necessary, add more water. Cover.
5. Let this simmer for up to 6 hrs.
6. Just before serving, add ketchup.
7. Add salt and pepper and Enjoy!
