1. Wash beans; put into a large bowl or cooking pot. Pour water over beans to cover them; let stand overnight, drain and discard water.
2. Put beans, garlic, onions, peppers, sugar, cumin and peppers in to a large stock pot. Pour water to cover mixture. Bring to a boil and simmer for 45 minutes.
3. Add salt and bacon; continue to simmer until beans are tender, about 45 minutes.
