  • 1 Heat oven to 350F (175C).
  • 2 Grease rectangular pan, 13 x9 x2 (33cm x 23cm x 5cm).
  • 3 Heat unsweetened chocolate and shortening in a 3 quart (3.0 L) saucepan over low heat until melted.
  • 4 Remove from heat; mix in sugar, vanilla and eggs.
  • 5 Stir in remaining ingredients except candies. Spread in pan.
  • 6 Sprinkle with candies; press lightly.
  • 7 Bake until brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan, about 30 minutes. (Do not overbake!).
  • 8 Cool completely; cut into bars.
