  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 48 walnut halves

  • 1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • 2 Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg and molasses, mix well.
  • 3 Sift together dry ingredients, add to shortening mixture, alternating with hot water. Mix well.
  • 4 Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet, cool. Frost with Butter Frosting and top each cookie with a walnut.
