It does my heart good to see our gang - right down to my great-grandchildren - reach eagerly for one of my homemade rolls. These are hearty with whole wheat and rich with old-fashioned goodness, and they bake up to a beautiful golden brown. -Ruby Williams, Bogalusa, Louisiana

2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
2-1/4 cups warm water (110° to 115°)
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup shortening
2 teaspoons salt
2 eggs
3 cups king arthur premium 100% whole wheat flour
3-1/2 to 4 cups king arthur unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 cup butter, melted
