This came from my Mom's Kansas Womens' Cookbook....maybe it was named after our White Mountains here in NH....I don't know. I always thought it smelled like doughnut batter when I made it as a child. Ingredients:
1 cup sugar |
1/3 c shortening |
1 egg |
1/2 c raisins (rehydrated and drained) |
3/4 c milk |
1/8 tsp salt |
1 3/4 c flour |
2 tsp baking powder |
1/2 tsp nutmeg |
1 tsp lemon juice or extract |
Directions:
1. Cream together thoroughly sugar, shortening and egg 2. Add remaining ingredients all at one time 3. Beat thoroughly, bake in a prepared loaf pan in a slow oven...325 degrees 4. Best the second day like pound cake (if you can wait that long) |
