A family classic that disappears as soon as it is ready. Serve with maple syrup (incredible taste combination) or for a less sweet alternative, applesauce goes well. The recipe makes a single Tourtiere but I tend to make 5 or 6 at a time and then freeze them. Read more . The time is longer if you include making your own pastry but frozen works well too. Ingredients:
2 lbs extra lean ground pork (you can use beef and pork as well for a slightly different flavour) |
1 onion, chopped |
2 tsp minced garlic |
1/2 c. hot beef broth |
pepper to taste |
1 tsp celery salt |
1/2 tsp ground cloves |
1 tsp sage |
1 cup mashed potatoes (instant work very well) |
pastry for double crust pie |
Directions:
1. Brown pork and onion together. 2. Add beef broth and seasonings and simmer, covered for at least 45 minutes. 3. Mix in the mashed potatoes and let cool for a short while. 4. Spread the mixture in a pie crust (9 ) and top with the top crust. 5. Seal the edges of the pie. 6. Slash the top crust in several places (make a design if you want it to look nice). 7. Bake at 450 F for 10-12 minutes and then reduce heat to 350 and bake for 30 minutes.. 8. Serve hot with maple syrup to top. |
