Great for breakfast. Ingredients:
12 slices french bread, cut 1/2 thick |
1 1/4 c milk |
1/8 tsp salt |
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon |
1 1/2 c sugar |
3/4 c water |
1 cinnamon stick |
4 large eggs beaten with a pinch of salt |
vegetable shortening or butter |
Directions:
1. Trim the bread crust off the slices. 2. Mix the milk and salt. Soak the bread slices in it the dust them with cinnamon. Let stand 15-20 mins. 3. In the meantime, boil the sugar, water and cinnamon stick over mod heat to make a light syrup- 222 F on a candy thermometer- about 10 mins. 4. Dip the bread slices in the egg one at a time and fry until golden brown, turning once. Dip in the egg only as many slices as you can fry at a time. 5. Drain on paper towels and set in one overlapping layer in an appropriate platter. 6. Pour the syrup over them and refrigerate before serving. 7. NOTE: You may add 1/3 C cream sherry or Muscat wine to the milk |
