An easy, alternative and semi-quick way to make baked beans - your way or mine, with plenty of room to adjust. I have added bell pepper, hot peppers, sundried tomatoes, parsley, thyme, and of course being from Louisiana, cayenne. It depends on how many children are showing up for the barbeque. Play with it and make it your own. Mine is different every time, even though my neighbors don't realise it. Tweak it for you. Ingredients:
1 (28 ounce) can baked beans |
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can black beans |
1 small onion |
4 garlic cloves |
1 teaspoon dried oregano |
1 teaspoon dried mustard |
6 slices bacon |
1 half bottle dark beer |
1 quarter cup brown sugar |
1 half teaspoon liquid smoke, pecan, mesquite, or hickory |
1 teaspoon black pepper |
Directions:
1. Brown the bacon. 2. Then add the onion. 3. After those are doing fine, add the garlic. 4. Now add all of the rest of the ingredients except the beer. 5. When the vegetables start to soften, add the beer and stir. 6. Put into a 350 degree oven for one hour covered, and then lower the temp to 325 degrees and cook for another 35 to 40 minutes. 7. It is important to watch the beans and see how thick they get. 8. You do not want them dry or soupy. 9. I cook in cast iron, so that is the only thing I can see that could turn out different for you. |
