Before the days of commercial sports drinks, people working outside apparently relied on a similar formulation. I've combined ingredients and prep techniques from several sources to come up with a recipe that suits me best. Ingredients:
1 cup apple cider vinegar |
1/2 cup molasses |
1 cup sugar |
2 ounces ginger, grated fresh |
2 quarts water, plus more later |
Directions:
1. Simmer apple cider vinegar, molasses, sugar, and ginger in 1 to 2 quarts of water for 15 minutes. 2. Add enough water to make a gallon of beverage. 3. Chill and serve. For optimal benefit, do not strain out the ginger. Optional: add 1/2 cup of oatmeal at beginning. |
