Sweet And Sour German Lettuce |

This is an old German recipe passed down in my husband's family. Great with pot roast, hot chicken dishes, and NE boiled dinners. Ingredients:
1 head iceberg lettuce |
1/2 cup sugar |
1 onion, thinly sliced |
3 strips bacon |
1/3 cup vinegar |
2/3 cup water |
salt and pepper to taste. |
Directions:
1. Cut head of lettuce in half and soak in water to cover, for 1/2 hour. Drain and cut as for cole slaw. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar. Let stand for 1/2 hour. 2. Slice up 1 onion, very thinly, and add to lettuce. 3. Cut up 3 strips bacon and fry, leaving drippings in pan. Add 1/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup water to bacon and bring to a boil. 4. Pour over lettuce. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately. |
