Swedish Pea Soup

From my collection of handwritten recipes 1970-1984. Note: Overnight soaking time is not included.
Ingredients:
2 cups yellow peas
6 cups water
ham bone or salt pork
1 small onion, minced
1/4 teaspoon ginger
salt and pepper
Directions:
1. Soak peas overnight and drain.
2. Put in cold water and boil one hour.
3. Skim carefully.
4. Add seasonings, onions and meat and boil until peas are done.
5. Remove meat when done and slice; serve separately.
6. Note: Cook time depends on how well done you like your peas.
