This is the easiest bread in the world to make. Perfect for collage students, it goes great with chili, soup, stew, as a sandwich bread, or even toasted with butter or cream cheese. The bread often comes out fairly dense since it does not spend any time rising, but it is still quite soft. Read more . It makes for nice thick slices that are quite filling. Different beer's can add different flavors, but they have to be pretty strong. I find a Guinness or another stout make it darker and more flavorful, while flavored beers such as a Honey Brown do add a hint of sweetness to the bread. Finally, this is a great bread to experiment with. You can add anything to it for amazing combinations! For example, try adding a half a cup of grated strong cheddar, a table spoon of fresh or dried herbs such as dill, some diced apple. My personal favorite is to add four table spoons of liquid honey to a beer bread made with a honey brown beer. It makes for a nice, slightly sweet version that makes a great sandwich. Ingredients:
3 cups all purpose flour |
1 tablespoon white sugar |
1 tablespoon baking powder |
1 teaspoon salt |
12 ounces of beer (one bottle/can), any kind you like except for light beer |
Directions:
1. Preheat Oven to 375 Fahrenheit/190 Celsius 2. Sift or whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a mixing bowl 3. pour in beer 4. Mix with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until the wet and dry are just incorporated. The mix will be thicker than a cake batter but softer than dough. 5. Spread into a small, greased loaf pan (I use a pan that's 4 inches by 7 inches) 6. Place on middle rack, and bake for 45 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean 7. Optional: Remove bread five minutes early, glaze the top of the bread with melted butter, or an egg white mixed with a bit of water, bake for last five minutes. For adding extra ingredients and flavors, I add most things to the dry ingredients (Cheese, apple, spices, Herbs). For honey or other liquid flavors, I add it after I add the beer and have mixed the batter. |
