This recipe was my grandmother's. The cookies stay very soft Ingredients:
1 cup butter |
2 cups sugar |
2 eggs (beaten) |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
3 1/2 cups flour |
2 teaspoons baking powder |
1 teaspoon salt |
1/4-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg |
3 drops lemon juice |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 cup buttermilk |
Directions:
1. CREAM together butter and sugar. 2. ADD- eggs and vanilla. 3. SIFT TOGETHER AND ADD TO WET INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and few drops of lemon juice. 4. Stir baking soda into buttermilk and add to mixture. Stir in the last cup of flour. 5. Chill overnight. Roll out (1/4 to 1/2 thickness) on floured board. Cut into desired shapes. Sprinkle with sugar if you don't plan to ice them. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees. |
