My Granmother started making this for her kids. It hasn'tbeen made since she passed. I hope to preserve her legacy! Ingredients:
1 1/2 yeast cakes(1 1/2 packets dry yeast will substitute) |
1/4c warm water |
1t sugar |
1c milk |
1c butter |
1tsp salt |
3 eggs beaten |
3 to 4c flour |
Directions:
1. Mix yeast in warm water and stir in sugar. 2. Scald milk and add 1/2c butter and salt. 3. Cool to lukewarm. 4. Stir beaten eggs and yeast mixture into lukewarm milk mixture. 5. Gradually mix in flour with a wooden spoon to make soft dough. 6. Transfer dough to a greased bowl, turning to grease top. 7. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk. 8. Divide dough into 2 halves and roll each portion out on a floured surface to a sheet 1/3 inch thick. 9. Melt remaining butter. 10. Cut dough with floured 3 inch diamond shaped cookie cutter. 11. Dip each piece of dough into melted butter and later into 10 inch ring mold overlapping points of dough pieces. 12. There should be about 3 layers but pan should be no more than 3/4 full or pieces of dough will pop off while baking. 13. Let rise until light(about 1 hour). 14. Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or until lightly brown. 15. For Cheese Monkey Bread: 3/4c shredded cheddar cheese along with flour. |
