The most delicious thing you can put in your mouth! My grandma won first prize at the fair every time with this recipe! Ingredients:
8oz unsweetened chocolate |
1c milk divided |
1c light brown sugar |
2c flour |
3 eggs |
1tsp baking soda |
1/2tsp salt |
1c sugar |
1/2c butter |
1/4c water |
1tsp vanilla |
Directions:
1. Prepare the following custard in a double boiler: 8oz chocolate, 1/2c milk, 1c firmly packed brown sugar, and one egg yolk. 2. Remove from heat when thickened. 3. Have other ingredients at about 75 degrees. 4. Sift before measuring: 2 cups flour. 5. Resift with: 1tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp salt. 6. Beat 1/2c butter until soft. 7. Add 1c sugar gradually and blend until very creamy. 8. Beat in 2 egg yolks 1 at a time. 9. Add the flour to the butter mixture in 3 parts, alternating with thirds of: 1/4c water, 1/2c milk, and 1tsp vanilla. 10. Stir the batter until smooth after each addition. 11. Stir in the chocolate custard. 12. Whip until stiff but not dry: 2 egg whites. 13. Fold them lightly into the cake batter. 14. Bake in greased pans at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. 15. Makes two 9 round layers. |
