My grandma's recipe for stolen, which she always bakes around Christmas time every year. Delicious and dense, this recipe makes enough for your extended family! Ingredients:
1/4 cup sugar |
1 1/2 cups warm water |
5 tablespoons yeast |
1 1/2 cups butter |
1 1/2 cups sugar |
1 1/2 cups hot water |
6 eggs |
2 tablespoons grated lemon rind |
2 cups flour |
1 teaspoon salt |
1 tablespoon cinnamon |
1 teaspoon nutmeg |
9 cups flour |
1/2 lb raisins |
1/2 lb mixed citron |
1/2 lb slivered almonds |
Directions:
1. Dissolve 1/4 cup sugar in 1.5 cups warm water. Add 5 tbs yeast and let bloom for 10 minutes. 2. In a separate bowl, cream the remaining sugar with the butter and eggs, then mix in the 1.5 cups of hot water and the lemon rind. 3. Add 2 cups of flour, mixed with the salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. 4. Mix in the yeast mixture, and then gradually mix in the remaining flour. Knead well. 5. Knead in the raisens, citron, and slivered almonds (dusted with a bit of flour). Knead well! 6. Raise once. 7. Form into loaves, with a log of marzipan in the middle (optional). 8. Brush with butter, and bake at 350 for 30 - 45 minutes. |
