When onions are fried gently, they release natural sugars. These sugars caramelise, giving sticky softened onions their characteristic flavour. Adding a teaspoon of sugar speeds up this process. If the onions fry too quickly or over a high heat they burn, a splash of water can prevent this. Will Keep in the fridge for 5 days or freeze for up to one month. Can be used as chutney, added to cheese on toast or as a component of other recipes (see Sticky Onion Gravy or recipe ute#181897) Ingredients:
50 g butter |
12 medium onions, sliced |
1 teaspoon sugar |
Directions:
1. Melt the butter in a large deep an and add the onions. 2. Cover and cook gently for 10 minutes until soft. 3. Add sugar and cook for 15 - 20 minutes, stirring, until all the liquid has evaporated and the onions are golden. 4. Divide into three batches if making any of the recipes above. |
