Steel cut oats or groats are the whole oat kernel, not steamed and pressed like rolled oats. They take longer to cook than normal oats, but the result is amazing. I just tried these out for the first time like 40 minutes ago. Read more ... I CAN'T GO BACK TO QUICK COOKING OATS NOW!! Deliciously creamy and chewy and they have this nutty flavour that you dont get with your regular oats. Also called Irish oats or Scotch oats... Some supermarkets might have them, or try the bulk bins at the healthfood shop.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup steel cut oats
1 cup water
Directions:
1. Place your little oaties and the water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally.
2. Reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring them up every few minutes so they don't stick.
3. (they might look a bit goopy to start with and you'll be all like oh no, its not gonna work i put too much water or something! ... thats what i was like, but it thickens out, don't worry).
4. Pour into you favorite cereal bowl and top with a dash or milk (or cream if you're feeling naughty). Sweeten with raw sugar or honey or syrup if you want OR add some fresh fruit!
5. You could also add in raisins or other dried fruit and/or spices like cinnamon while its cooking. Maybe some grated orange rind and some cardamom! Try replacing 1/4 of the water with your favorite juice! The possibilities are endless!!
6. This quantity will serve one, but you can see how easy it is to make more; just get a bigger pot and double quantities for 2 people, quadruple for 4, etc. Cook time will also be increased though (about 30 minutes for 4 serves)
7. GO TRY IT NOW!!!!
