Smothered Fresh Corn

From the cookbook, Cooking with the Hearts of Steel Women's Support Group. 3 (12 ounces) cans of whole kernel corn, undrained may be used in this dish.
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon corn oil
2 medium onions, chopped
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
4 cups fresh corn
2 cups water
3/4 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
pepper
Directions:
1. Saute in oil, onions until brown, about 10 minutes.
2. Add 1/4 c water.
3. Cook for 5 minutes.
4. Stir in tomato sauce, simmer for 20 minutes.
5. Add 1/2 c water.
6. Cook 10 minutes more.
7. Add corn, water, sugar and salt.
8. Cook for about 40 more minutes.
9. Add pepper to taste.
