Serve this versatile side dish with baked ham and cheese grits, or spoon over hot buttered biscuits. Balsamic vinegar and onion give the variation a savory note that's perfect with grilled chicken or pan-fried pork chops. Both versions are delicious sprinkled with lightly salted, roasted pecans. Ingredients:
3 tablespoons butter |
5 large granny smith apples, peeled and sliced (about 2 1/4 lb.) |
2/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar |
1 teaspoon apple pie spice |
Directions:
1. Melt butter in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat; add apples and remaining ingredients. Sauté 15 to 20 minutes or until apples are tender. 2. Skillet-Fried Balsamic Apples and Sweet Onion: Omit apple pie spice. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat; add 2 large sweet onions, sliced, and sauté 5 minutes. Add apples, brown sugar, and 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, and sauté 15 to 20 minutes or until apples are tender. Makes 6 servings. Prep: 15 min., Cook: 20 min. |
