Another Pennsylvania Dutch recipe from my mom's side of the family. It's very similar to a pecan pie, without the nuts. Gooey and sweet it's great warm with vanilla ice cream. Ingredients:
1 cup flour |
2/3 cup brown sugar |
1 tablespoon shortening |
1 cup molasses |
1 egg |
3/4 cup hot water |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
1 unbaked pie shell |
Directions:
1. Mix the flour, sugar, and shortening. Reserve 1/2 cup of the crumbs. 2. Pour hot water over the baking soda, add the molasses, beaten egg, vanilla and crumbs (not the reserved 1/2 cup). Pour into an unbaked pie shell and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of crumbs. 3. Bake at 425 degree farenheit oven for 10 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and bake until brown, apx 20-30 minutes. |
