SHOO FLY CAKE This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Crenshaw Estate in Grand Prairie, Texas in 1994. Ingredients:
4 cups sifted flour measured before sifting |
1 cup granulated sugar |
1 cup dark brown sugar |
1 teaspoon salt |
1 cup shortening |
1 cup baking molasses |
2 cups warm water |
1 tablespoon baking powder |
Directions:
1. Combine flour, sugars, salt and shortening by hand until crumbly. 2. Take out 1 cup of this mixture and save to top cake later. 3. Combine molasses, water and baking soda by hand then stir crumbs into the liquid. 4. Grease and flour a rectangular baking pan then pour mixture into baking pan. 5. Sprinkle one cup saved crumbs over top of cake then bake at 325 for 1 hour. |
