Self Frosting Marshmallow Applesauce Cake

I have not tried this recipe. I got it from Apple Cookery Spiced with History. The recipe was submitted by Donna Kruger.
Ingredients:
2 3/4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 cups unsweetened applesauce
1 cup walnut halves
20 large marshmallows
Directions:
1. Sift dry ingredients together.
2. Add shortening, eggs and applesauce.
3. Beat until smooth and well blended.
4. Fold in walnuts.
5. Pour into greased and floured 9x13 pan.
6. Press whole marshmallows into batter to bottom of pan.
7. (Twenty marshmallows should make 4 rows with 5 marshmallows to a row). They will rise to the top during baking and make the frosting.
8. Bake at 350 for about 50 minutes.
