Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour |
2 teaspoons cream of tartar |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 teaspoon salt |
1/4 cup shortening |
1 1/4 cups buttermilk |
1 egg, beaten |
2 teaspoons maple syrup |
Directions:
1. Combine flour, cream of tartar, soda, and salt; stir well. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. 2. Combine buttermilk, egg, and syrup; stir into flour mixture just until dry ingredients are moistened. 3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 8 equal portions, shaping each into a smooth ball. Press down with fingertips to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into 4 equal pie-shaped pieces. Prick each with the tines of a fork. Place on greased and floured baking sheets. Bake at 400° for 10 to 12 minutes. |
