This family favorite was made by my mother back in the '20s. A roast was out of the question on our budget, but chopped meat was only pennies a pound. -Chris Christoffers, Lake Worth, Florida Ingredients:
2 eggs |
1 cup water, divided |
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs |
1/4 cup chopped onion |
3/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning |
3/4 teaspoon salt |
1/4 teaspoon pepper |
1-1/2 pounds ground turkey or beef |
1 cup beef broth |
1/4 cup red wine vinegar |
1 to 2 tablespoons brown sugar |
10 whole cloves |
1 bay leaf |
12 gingersnaps, crumbled |
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, 3/4 cup water, bread crumbs, onion, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Crumble beef over mixture; mix well. Shape into eight patties. 2. In a large skillet, brown patties on both sides; drain. Add the broth, vinegar, brown sugar, cloves, bay leaf, gingersnaps and remaining water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
