This recipe is so easy, especially if you pre-boil the bratwurst and have them waiting in the freezer. Dinner can be on the table in minutes! The taste will surprise you for so few ingredients. You can even substitute large sweet Italian sausage, too! And you'll love the technique for getting plump, moist onions for all your cooking. Prep time includes boiling the bratwurst and micro-cooking the onions Ingredients:
6 bratwursts, cooked (see below) |
1/2 cup ketchup |
1 teaspoon onion powder |
2 large onions, chopped coarsely |
1 tablespoon italian seasoning (or more to your taste) |
Directions:
1. Pre-cook (and reduce the fat from) the bratwurst-punch holes with a fork on all sides, then boil for about 15 minutes. Remove from water, and cut into small circle pieces. (If the bratwurst is pink inside, put back into the water and boil an additional 5 minutes). 2. For softer, plump cooked onions-coarsely chop, put in microwave-safe bowl, add enough water just to cover onions, then cover with plastic wrap, and microwave on high for about 5 minutes, then drain. 3. Put all the ingredients into a frying pan, mix thoroughly, then heat through about 5 minutes. Add more ketchup if necessary, based on the size of your bratwurst, enough to coat evenly and give you a bit of extra sauce . 4. I serve this with rice, or on hamburger buns and it's good with cold salads. 5. Note: I pre-boil batches of bratwurst as above, then flash-freeze on a cookie sheet, so they can be put into freezer bags and taken out one-at-a-time as needed for all recipes. Works great! 6. Note: For a bit of zip you can add a dash of hot sauce. |
