Truly South African. In my language we call them souskluitjies . Ingredients:
syrup |
750 ml cold water |
200 g sugar |
10 ml butter or margarine |
7 ml grounded cinnamon |
pinch of salt |
dough |
140 g self raising flour |
100 g sugar |
1 ml baking powder |
1 ml salt |
40 g butter or margarine, room temperature |
1 extra large egg |
100 ml cold water |
Directions:
1. Syrup: 2. Bring all the syrups' ingredients to the boil. 3. Dough: 4. Sift all the dry ingredients together. 5. Work the butter into the dry ingredients with your fingers. 6. Whisk the egg and water together. 7. Mix together. 8. Place spoonfuls of the dough into the boiling syrup. 9. Use a dessert spoon for this. 10. Lower the heat. 11. Put a tight fitting lid on. 12. Simmer for 8 minutes. 13. Do not lift the lid. 14. Take off and serve hot. |
