A very manly sandwich. There are conflicting stories about its origins, though it's most likely that Arnold Rueben (of the once famous Reuben’s Delicatessen in New York) 'invented' it in about 1914. Ingredients:
2 tbsp dijon mustard |
80 ml mayonnaise |
12 slices rye bread, toasted |
125 ml sauerkraut |
8 slices pastrami |
4 gherkins, finely sliced |
8 slices emmental cheese |
1 pinch salt and milled pepper |
Directions:
1. 1 Mix mustard and mayo together. 2. 2 Spread on 4 slices of toast. Top each slice with equal amounts of sauerkraut, pastrami, gherkins, cheese and seasoning. 3. 3 Sandwich with a toast slice and repeat filling, then top with a third slice of toast. 4. 4 Secure with a toothpick. |
