Spicy and sweet, this old favorite is from the Michigan Dutch chapter of the United States Regional Cookbook, Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago, 1947. Ingredients:
3 cups brown sugar |
1 cup butter |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1 cup sour milk |
4 eggs, well beaten |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 teaspoon clove |
2 teaspoons cinnamon |
2 teaspoons nutmeg |
5 cups flour (amount is approximate) |
1/2 cup walnuts, broken |
2 cups raisins |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F. 2. Cream sugar and butter; add salt, sour milk and eggs. 3. Beat well. 4. Sift spices with two cups of the flour into the sugar/butter/egg mixture. 5. Add nuts and raisins and enough more flour to make a dough that will drop from a spoon. 6. Drop from a teaspoon onto a cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until golden. |
