Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ounces red food coloring
2 tablespoons cocoa
2 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon vinegar
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup margarine
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions:
1. Blend shortening, sugar, eggs. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add to mixture. Add flour and salt with buttermilk and vanilla to mixture. Alternately add soda and vinegar. Do not beat. Bake in 2 8 cake pans, greased and floured. Bake 30 miutes at 350.
2. Frosting: cook flour and milk in double boiler until thick. Cool. Blend sugar, margarine and vanilla until fluffly. Add to flour mixture. Beat until whipped. Spread on layers and sprinkle with finely chopped nuts or coconut if desired,.
