This is a very old recipe - my requested birthday cake every year when I was a kid. Thought I'd share with ya'll! Ingredients:
paste |
4 tbsp. cocoa |
1 tsp. red food color |
2 tbsp. strong coffee |
cake |
1 1/2 c. sugar |
1/2 c shortening |
2 eggs |
2 c. flour minus 2 tbsp. |
1/2 tsp. salt |
1 tsp. soda |
1 tsp. vanilla |
1 cup sour milk |
frosting |
1 lb. powdered sugar |
4 tbsp. cocoa |
4 tbsp. strong coffee |
1 tsp. vanilla |
red food color as desired |
Directions:
1. Make paste and set aside. 2. Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs. 3. Combine flour, salt, and soda. Add to cake alternately with the sour milk. 4. Add vanilla, then the paste mixture last. Mix well. 5. Bake at 350 til tests done with toothpick. (Above bake time is a guess; no temp. or time was on Mom's recipe.) 6. We always used layer pans, but can use 13x9. 7. Frosting: 8. Cream the butter or margarine. Combine the cocoa and sugar. Add gradually, mixing well. Then add vanilla, coffee, and red food color to desired shade. Frost cool cake. |
