When my husband and I went to Germany, red cabbage was one of our favorite foods and I had to find a comparable recipe when we got home. This one fit the bill exactly. Ingredients:
1/2 head of red cabbage (l 1/2 pounds) |
1 large cooking apple (peeled and chopped) |
1/2 cup chopped onion |
2 tablespoons sugar |
2 tablespoons vinegar (increase to taste) |
3 slices bacon (cooked and crumbled) |
1 tablespoon bacon drippings (or cooking oil) |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1/2 cup boiling water |
Directions:
1. Coarsely shred cabbage 2. In large sauce pan, combine all ingredients 3. Bring to boil 4. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1 hour |
