Potato Clam Chower

I made this recipe up for my family loves Clam Chowder. I just wish that my dad was here to taste it for he would love it too.
Ingredients:
4 slices bacon, cut in 1/2 pieces
1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
2 -4 garlic cloves (to taste)
4 medium potatoes, cut in 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup or 1 (10 3/4 ounce) can cream of celery soup
2 (6 1/2 ounce) cans clams, not drained
1 quart half-and-half, see note
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup water
Directions:
1. NOTE: can also use heavy cream and half and half. As long as what you use is 1 quart.
2. Dice potatoes in 1/4 to 1/2 inch cubes.
3. Dice bacon in to 1/2 pieces start to fry add onions to bacon and saute them with bacon till done.
4. In large pot add potatoes, clams(with juice), clam juice, soup, and half and half, stir till soup is mixed inches.
5. Add bacon and onion.
6. Simmer on med-low for 1 hour or so, till potatoes are tender.
7. Mix cornstarch and water stir into soup to thicken. IF needed.
8. Enjoy.
