The first time I had my mother-in-laws Golubki I thought it was the best meal ever. Well, close enough. So that shows you how good it is. You can either simmer the cabbage rolls on the stovetop or bake them in the oven. Read more . Either way, they are delicious. If I bake them in the oven I like to either spray the casserole with Pam or drizzle a little olive oil and rub it all over. Ingredients:
1 head cabbage |
1 lb. ground beef |
1/2 lb. ground pork or veal |
16 oz. can tomato sauce (your favourite) |
8 oz. can tomatoes |
2 cups cooked rice |
2 eggs |
1 onion finely chopped |
2 cloves garlic, minced |
2 tbsp. butter or margarine |
salt and pepper to taste |
Directions:
1. Remove the core from the cabbage. 2. Put the cabbage in boiling water and remove the leaves as they soften. 3. Sauté the onions and garlic in the butter/margarine for a short time. 4. In a bowl add the onions, meat, cooked rice, eggs and salt and pepper, mix this well. 5. Place about 2 Tbsp. of the meat mixture in the center of a cabbage leaf and roll inward, then roll sides in and continue to roll. 6. Place the rolls in a large pot and pour the tomato sauce onto the rolls. 7. Then, with you hands, squeeze canned tomatoes and arrange on top of the cabbage rolls. 8. Simmer over low heat for 2-3 hours. |
