These are a delicious fun sandwich to make and eat. Great served Minestrone or other soup. You can make the turnovers ahead, refrigerate and bake later. I got this recipe years ago from My Great Recipes . Read more . They are a favorite around here. Ingredients:
1 to 1 1/4 lbs. bulk italian sausage |
1/2 cup chopped onion |
1/2 cup chopped green pepper |
1 can (8oz) tomato sauce |
3 tablespoon dried bread crumbs |
18 sheets phylo dough |
3/4 cup melted unsalted butter, to brush dough |
6 tablespoons parmesan cheese, to sprinkle on dough |
3 (1oz ) mozzarella cheese |
Directions:
1. -preheat oven to 375.F- 2. In a large frying pan, brown the sausage with the onion and green pepper. Drain off fat. 3. Stir in tomato sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon berad crumbs. 4. Spread each of 3 sheets of phylo dough with butter. sprinkle with bread crumbs. Stack them. 5. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place 1/2 slice (cut into triangles) Mozzarella cheese onto one corner of the dough/ Top with 1/6 of the meat mixture. 6. Fold phylo dough lengthwise over to cover the meat filling. Fold up flag style to make a trianglular packet. 7. Brush with more butter. Place on baking sheet. Repeat with remaining phylo and filling to make 6 turnovers. Discard milky butter solids. 8. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. |
