Pilaf-Style Basmati Rice

From Cook's Illustrated Online. No need to soak or rinse the rice.
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon canola oil or 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or 1 tablespoon corn oil
3 inches piece cinnamon sticks, halved
2 green cardamom pods
2 whole cloves
1/4 cup thinly sliced onion
1 cup basmati rice
1 teaspoon table salt
1 1/2 cups water
Directions:
1. Heat oil in a medium saucepan until almost smoking. Add whole spices and cook until they pop. Add onions and cook until translucent, stirring frequently, about 2 minutes. Add rice and stir about 1 minute, until a nutty smell develops.
2. Add salt and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, cover tightly and cook until water has all been absorbed, about 17 minutes. Let stand, covered, another 10 minutes. Fluff with fork and serve.
