This recipe comes from my good friend,Pam, in NC. She starts this on the stovetop and finishes it in the crockpot. It's a great Southern comfort food and is extremely easy and inexpensive to prepare. I've tweaked the gravy by adding the GravyMaster and Accent, but it gives the gravy some depth. I serve it with mashed potatoes or white rice. Ingredients:
8 cube steaks (enough for your crowd. i usually make 8 for my family of 4) |
salt and pepper |
vegetable oil (enough to cover bottom of your skillet) |
flour |
1 -2 onion, sliced |
water |
accent seasoning |
gravy master |
Directions:
1. Lay the steaks out on a large platter and salt and pepper both sides. 2. Pour oil in a large, deep skillet and heat over medium high heat. 3. When oil is hot enough, place steaks in a single layer-don't over crowd. 4. Get a good, dark brown sear (crust) on each side and transfer to a crock pot. 5. Add sliced onions to the pan and cook them til soft. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to the crockpot. 6. To the pan drippings, add a few heaping spoonfuls of flour and whisk. You want to make a thick roux for the base of your gravy. cook at least a minute or 2 to cook out the raw flour taste. 7. Fill a liquid measuring container (glass pyrex type) with water and keep next to stove-you'll want it at arms reach. 8. Slowly whisk in water until you have a desirable gravy consistancy, adding as much water as you need to do this. 9. Add plenty of salt and peper to taste. 10. I whisk in a little Gravy Master and Accent to taste. 11. Pour gravy over everything in the crock pot and cook on low all day (6hrs). |
