Every respected Southerner has a good recipe for Mint Juleps. This one came from a dear friend of mine in Kentucky and he makes them every time he has a party. Of course, we all end up sleeping at his house because these buddies pack a whallop! These take awhile to make, so prepare ahead of time. Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups sugar |
1 cup water |
3/4 cup mint leaf, coarsely chopped |
2 1/2 cups bourbon, good quality |
Directions:
1. In a medium saucepan combine the sugar, water and mint leaves. 2. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly. 3. Boil for about 6 minutes or until the sugar is completely dissolved. 4. Remove saucepan from heat, cover and let this mixture sit for at least 12 hours, stirring occasionally. 5. After 12 hours, pour the mixture through a strainer to remove the mint leaves (throw the leaves out). 6. Add bourbon and stir. 7. Chill for about an hour before serving. 8. Serve over crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint sprigs. |
