This delicous fresnch toast uses dark beer in the batter! Ingredients:
1 (1-pound) french baguette |
8 eggs |
1/2 cup all-purpose flour |
6 tablespoons sugar |
1/2 teaspoon baking powder |
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract |
1 cup milk |
1 cup beer, preferably dark |
coarse salt |
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter |
butter for serving |
maple syrup for serving |
Directions:
1. Cut the bread diagonally into 3/4-inch-thick slices and place in one or more dishes large enough to hold the slices in a single layer. 2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla, milk, beer and a pinch of salt. 3. Pour over the bread slices, turning to soak both sides. 4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or at least 1 hour. 5. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. 6. In a very large ovenproof skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. 7. Add the soaked bread to brown on one side. 8. Turn the bread over and place the skillet in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until the toast is puffed and golden brown on the bottom. 9. Do in batches if necessary. 10. Serve immediately with additional butter and maple syrup. |
