This is another really old, but truly good sweet bread recipe. It is great to serve during the holidays. You will wow your friends with this one! When cool, I like to sift confectionary's sugar on the top. You may spread softened cream cheese on the slices if you desire. Ingredients:
2 cups sifted flour |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
1/2 teaspoon baking soda |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
3/4 cup finely chopped dates |
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh grated orange rind |
3/4 cup chopped walnuts |
1 tablespoon flour |
1 egg, beaten |
1 cup sugar |
2 tablespoons butter, melted |
3/4 cup orange, juce |
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, sift together 2 cups flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. 2. In a small bowl, combine dates, orange rind, and walnuts with 1 tablespoons flour and set aside. 3. In another bowl, combine the beaten egg, sugar, butter and orange juice; blend well. Stir into the dry ingredients, blending well. 4. Stir in date mixture and blend well. 5. Pour into greased and floured 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2-inch loaf pan. 6. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven 1 hour or until bread tests done. 7. Cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan; cool on rack. |
