This is an old timer's recipe from New Hampshire and Vermont. Ingredients:
7 apples, cored, peeled and sliced |
1/4 tsp salt |
3/4 cup sugar |
2 tbsp molasses |
butter bits |
pie pastry for top only |
whipped or ice cream |
preheat oven to 450ยบ. |
Directions:
1. By layers, fill a deep ovenproof skillet with sliced apples. 2. For 7 apples mix 1/4 tsp salt with 3/4 cup sugar and use to sprinkle over the layers of apple. When the skillet is filled, pour 2 Tbsp molasses over the top and dot with butter bits. 3. Cover the skillet and set on the stove, where the apples can heat through and soften, not boil, for 5 minutes. Remove cover and cover with plain pastry and bake for 40 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream. |
