This is a traditional Dutch recipe handed down from my husband's family-mostly made at New Year's. Really delicious! Ingredients:
1 cake of compressed yeast (.6 oz) |
1 c warm milk |
2 1/4 c flour |
2 tsp salt |
1 egg |
3/4 c raisins or dried currants |
1 granny smith apple finely choppd |
1 quart vegetable oil for frying |
1-2 c icing sugar for rolling |
Directions:
1. Break up the yeast and stir into warm milk. Let stand for 5-10 minutes to dissolve. 2. Sift flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. 3. Stir the yeast mixture and the egg into the flour and stir to mix into a smooth batter. 4. Stir in the raisins or currants and apple. 5. Cover bowl and let rise in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in size, about 1 hour. 6. Heat oil in deep pan to 375 degrees. 7. Use 2 spoons to shape dough into balls and drop them carefully into the hot oil. 8. Fry the balls until golden brown, about 8-10 minutes. 9. Drain the oliebollen on paper towels then roll in icing sugar. 10. Arrange decoratively on serving platter then dust more icing sugar over top. Serve warm. Yum! |
