This recipe has been passed down from my mom's grandmother over 30 years ago, before box cakes ever came about. It's absolutely delicious, and surprisingly not hard to make. My mom is known for her chocolate cake. Try this recipe and see why.
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup water
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup margarine
1/4 cup cocoa
1 tablespoon milk
1 (16 ounce) bag powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 dash cinnamon
Directions:
1. Place flour and sugar in large mixing bowl. In a medium saucepan, heat and stir margarine, shortening, water and cocoa. Bring to a light boil, do not let burn to pan. Remove from heat and pour over flour mixture. Mix; adding buttermilk, eggs, soda, cinnamon and vanilla, one at a time. Pour into greased and floured cake pan. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until done. Let cool before making icing.
2. Icing: In medium saucepan heat and stir margarine, cocoa and milk. Bring to boil and remove from heat. Add sugar and vanilla to desired consistency, add cinnamon if desired (adds that little something) Spread while hot.
