Sometimes you just want a basic old-fashioned recipe with no cutesy stuff. This is a just that, a classic old-fashioned apple pie the way grandmother used to make it. The ultimate comfort food. Ingredients:
pastry for 2 crust pie |
1 cup sugar |
2tbs flour |
1 tsp cinnamon |
1/4 tsp fresh grated nutmeg |
1/4 tsp salt |
about 7 cups sliced peeled apples (about 2 1/2 lbs) |
2 tbs butter (no margerine) |
Directions:
1. Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. 2. Blend spices, set aside 3. Place pastry into 9 inch pie pan 4. Peel and core apples and slice about 1/4 inch thick 5. Mix spices through apples 6. Heap into pie shell. apples should be in a large mound as they will shrink while cooking. If not enough apples, add more. 7. Dot with butter 8. Place top shell over apples and flute edges 9. Cut vent holes. You can cut little triangles or diamonds, or whatever. use cut out pieces to decorate crust. 10. Bake in 425 degree oven for 50 to 60 minutes or until crust is browned and apples are tender. 11. Note: Use a cooking apple such as Granny Smith. |
